Car dealer donates to Northwest YMCA

NORTH CANAAN — The Northwest YMCA (which has a branch in North Canaan) received a $70,400 donation from Center Subaru in Torrington at an event on Thursday, March 30.

According to company marketing director Kim Bourke, funds for the donation were raised from a sales campaign that was held from November to January.

As part of a national campaign, the Subaru corporation donated $250 from every new car sale to a local charity; Center Subaru matched the donation.

In total, Center Subaru and the corporation raised $70,400 for the Northwest YMCA.

Organization CEO Greg Brisco was on hand to receive the funds.

“I’m so happy, I feel like I’m in a dream that I don’t want to wake up from because the dream is so good,” Brisco said. “At this time, when the state is tightening its belt with funding, this is really needed. We have several programs in the fall that we are worried that we might have to cut.”

Brisco said that the organization has not determined what the funds from the donation will be used for.

“Last year, Center Subaru made a donation that we used to support families who could not afford to send their children to a summer triathlon program,” Brisco said. “We also used the funds to pay for unexpected equipment failure. I do know that we are going to be using the funds for the Winsted, Torrington and North Canaan branches of the Northwest YMCA.”

Center Subaru general manager Andy Maiolo added that the store has donated more than $164,000 to the Northwest YMCA over the past four years.

“It’s amazing what the Northwest YMCA does for the community,” Maiolo said. “We are fortunate to have them.”
