Copake cow named Supreme Champion, two years in a row

COPAKE — When Cutting Edge T Delilah blew out the candles on her seventh birthday cake on Dec. 2, she did so as a two-time Supreme Champion.

Delilah is owned by Ken Main of Elite Dairy in Copake, N.Y., and Dr. Kenny Joe Manion of Kentucky.

She is one of only four Brown Swiss cows to have been named Supreme Champion at the World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wis., in the past 50 years. Following her win in the same category in 2018, Delilah is the first Brown Swiss to win Supreme Champion two years in a row since 1988-1989.

Main bought Delilah’s mother, Dancer, as a calf roughly 12 years ago. Dancer was also a prize-winning show cow. Asked what makes a cow a winner, Main said simply, “Some girls are a 1, some are a 3. Delilah is a 10.”

He cites her balance as a key factor, and her ability to “fill out” before a show.

The World Dairy Expo, as its name implies, is where dairy farmers from all over the world gather and compare their livestock. Delilah competed against approximately 2,500 other cows in Madison, in front of a crowd of at least 65,000 people, most of them dairy professionals.

The Elite Dairy team made the 22-hour trip from Copake to Madison with 11 cows this year. The expo was from Sept. 29 to Oct. 3.

Delilah, in particular, seems to enjoy traveling.

“She can’t wait to get in and go,” Main said, much like the family dog that loves to go for a ride. Next year, he said, they will try their luck in Madison again.

Delilah made news of another kind in September of this year. Main and his dairy partner, Peter Main, dissolved their business and dispersed a herd of 170 cows in the process.

Delilah was a commanding draw at the sale, which took place at the farm in Copake, posting a record-breaking $210,000. Though she has a new owner, she will remain at Elite Dairy.
