Frontier and high-speed access

CORNWALL — At the end of 2014, Frontier Communications purchased a local Southern New England Telecommunications (SNET) network from AT&T.

Frontier has made a proposal to all the towns in Northwest Connecticut to wire every household and business with fiber optic broadband technology, guaranteeing a minimum download speed of 18 megabytes per second.

The private/public plan would be paid for by the town through a mandatory tax bill to all residential and business units.

That cost would be $20 per month for the first five years of service and $10 per month for the following 10 years.

Representatives of both Frontier and NWCONNect, a volunteer organization whose goal is to improve high-speed internet and phone service,  have been in communication with the Cornwall Board of Selectmen and the Northwest Hills Council of Governments to discuss the proposal.

Many people argue that Frontier’s proposal, if accepted, would give the area an economic edge and ensure an advanced infrastructure for safety and education.

No decisions have been made, and more information is being gathered.
