Getting ready for the first day of school

WINSTED — A tour through Pearson Middle School Tuesday, Aug. 18, revealed newly painted railings, new door handles,  renovated bathrooms, a new nurse’s office and a number of rooms converted into classroom space to accommodate the fifth-grade class, which is moving from the town’s elementary schools to Pearson this year.

The school will now include grades five through eight and has undergone a number of improvements to make the building more handicapped-accessible, including a wheelchair lift, right, shown by Principal Clay Krevolin, which will enhance student access to the school stage. Above, cafeteria tables and attached benches were out for a power wash while workers toiled inside, putting the final touches on floors and bathrooms.

Krevolin said this summer has been his busiest ever and he hopes all of Winsted’s schools have a successful opening next Wednesday, Aug. 26. Teachers will start work Monday, Aug. 24, gathering that morning at Pearson for a breakfast and convocation, followed by work and preparation in their respective classrooms.
