Henna tattoos that wash off (eventually) at KML

KENT — The Kent Memorial Library hosted a henna tattoo event on Friday, May 12. With a Bollywood movie playing in the background and food to snack on from places around the globe where henna is practiced, girls lined up to have henna artist Karen Stevens draw designs on their hands and arms.

Henna, or mehendi, is an ancient form of non-permanent body art that is commonly used in India, the Middle East and northern Africa.

Dried leaves from the henna plant, Lawsonia inermis, are ground into a fine powder and mixed with lemon juice to form a paste. The paste is placed in a squeeze bottle with a fine tip to allow for easy application of intricate designs.

The paste releases a reddish-brown dye that temporarily stains the skin. The longer the paste is allowed to stay on the skin, the longer the design will last after the paste is washed off.

Stevens became interested in henna about 10 years ago when she attended a henna party hosted by her yoga teacher.

“I thought to myself, ‘I could do this!’” she said. Ever since, she has been doodling henna designs on herself and others.
