New guiderails for Route 7

KENT — As part of an ongoing maintenance program this summer, new guiderails will be installed along Route 7 between the southern border of Kent and South River Road in Cornwall. The state-funded project was announced in February by the state Office of Transportation Maintenance.

Work will occur after April 1 and be completed by October 31.  It will begin at the town line between Kent and New Milford and proceed northward to River Road South in Cornwall. To be replaced are 18,700 feet of guiderails, replacing currently existing sections along Route 7, according to Department of Transportation spokesman Kevin Nursick. The existing sections consist of both steel beam design and cable and post design.

The current guiderail system will be replaced with RB-350 Rail, Nursick explained. RB stands for “roadside barrier.”  The rail is also compliant with MASH recommendations. MASH is the “Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware.”  That manual details the use of W-shaped steel beam, each section overlapping in the direction of the flow of traffic, as a safety feature.

Nursick explained that each metal post has a plastic block-out panel between the steel rail and the post. With the former design, a vehicle’s tire could slide under the steel beam and impact a support post. Under the new design, Nursick said, the beam with the plastic panel will absorb the impact and lessen the chances of the vehicle striking the post.

In conjunction with the state’s Scenic Road Guiderail Replacement Project, the work is being undertaken by the state Office of Maintenance for District 4, with offices in Thomaston, Conn.
