New transfer station regs

NORTH CANAAN — New transfer station stickers are available at the North Canaan transfer station, according to First Selectman Charles Perotti.

Fees have increased this year, due to an increase in costs to the town for disposing of each ton of trash, Perotti said. The new disposal fee charged to the town this year is $83 per ton; last year’s rate was $72. The town also needs to pay a hauling fee for hauling the trash away.

North Canaan residents using the transfer station must purchase a sticker for a charge of $60 (seniors over 62 pay a reduced fee of $30). Property owners who live out of state and use the transfer station will pay $75. Commercial stickers will cost $100.

Stickers must be purchased before May 1 to avoid a late fee of $30 added to the cost of the sticker.

Perotti noted that last year, from the sale of 600 stickers, the town received a total of $29,000 in sticker fees and an additional $5,400 in bulky trash fees. The annual total budget for the transfer station is $268,600.

New stickers may only be purchased by visiting the transfer station during its open hours: Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. and Sunday between 8 and 10:30 a.m.  The transfer station is closed on Tuesday and Wednesday.  Only checks and credit cards are accepted; cash payments are not allowed.

Every pound of recycling done according to the regulations saves the town tax dollars, Perotti said, urging everyone to join in the recycling effort to keep recyclable items out of the trash stream.
