Posts set to honor fallen soldiers

HARLEM VALLEY — On the last Monday in May each year, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) posts every year celebrate the lives of soldiers who died in conflicts.

Here’s what posts in Millerton North East, Pine Plains and Amenia have planned for Memorial Day.

Millerton/North East

The day starts at 6 a.m., when veterans will meet at the post home and proceed to local cemeteries, where an American flag will be raised and a rifle salute and taps will be played.

At 9:30, the parade will form at Century Boulevard and start a half hour later.

After the parade, participants will march to Irondale Cemetery for a short ceremony at the veterans plot.

The program will conclude at the village green where Lt. Col. Gilbert E. Mestler, former deputy commander of Special Operations Command—Korea, will speak.

Former Legion Commander Roger Bradley said the organization aims to get more community involvement in this year’s parade than ever.

"Whether it’s an organization or individually," he said. "We want all of the children to come out and ride their bikes [in the parade]. We encourage anybody and everybody to march."

Prizes will be awarded to youngsters.

Amenia

According to VFW Harlem Valley Post 5444’s Rick Butler, a Memorial Day service will be held at Fountain Square, which abuts the Amenia traffic light, at 11 a.m.

The Amenia Fire Company, Dutchess County Deputy Sheriffs and New York state troopers will be at the ceremony.

"Especially now, when we’re in a war, it’s good to give respect to the country we’re living in," Butler said. "People get caught up in everyday things. These issues aren’t as big as someone laying their life down. They gave it all."

Pine Plains

The Pine Plains VFW and American Legion will join forces this year.

A parade will start on Main Street at 10:30 a.m.

It will stop at the town clock on Route 82, where speeches and a presentation of the American flag will take place.

The crowd will then proceed to Evergreen Cemetery for a 21-gun salute.

A reception will follow at the American Legion post home on Main Street.
