Sharon approves Comcast internet proposal

SHARON — Responding to a recent forum when residents heard a proposal from Comcast to partner with the town in extending high-speed internet service to every home and business, the Board of Selectmen voted to forward the $1.6 million proposal to the Board of Finance for approval.

The action was taken at the selectmen’s regular meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 23.

The Board of Finance will meet in early September to consider the Comcast proposal that has evolved from nearly three years of meetings of the Sharon Connect Task Force, a volunteer group of residents who examined aspects of various alternatives for expanding internet access to cover Sharon’s unserved areas.

The plan that Comcast offered was found to be the most efficient alternative carrying the least risk and the most benefit to the town.

If the plan is approved by the Board of Finance, the proposal will be voted upon at a Town Meeting.
