Still bargains at the Bargain Barn

SHARON — For a while it looked as though the Bargain Barn was going the way of all good things. The organization that ran the Sharon thrift shop, the Health Care Auxiliary (founded in 1912 as the Sharon Hospital Auxiliary), announced last November that it would cease to exist at the end of the year. HCA President Harriet Weiss said there were no longer enough volunteers to keep the group running.

Most of HCA’s concerns — the Gazebo Gift Shop at Sharon Hospital, the annual Cancer Survivor Celebration, health professional scholarships and grants to a range of area health-care programs — were taken over by other organizations. But Weiss said that no group could be found to assume responsibility for the Bargain Barn.

A week later, Tri-State Public Communications announced it would assume responsibility for the Bargain Barn. Tri-State’s principals, Marshall Miles and Jill Goodman, agreed to take over management and operations of the shop. The company manages and operates several radio stations in the Tri-state area, including WHDD in Sharon, where Miles and Goodman are heard every morning.
