Summer reading from House of Books

KENT — With the summer months upon us, people are spending more time outside, at the beach or lake, working on their tans and catching up on their summer reading list. What are people reading this summer? A quick stop into the House of Books on Main Street provided clues to the most popular reads for 2014.

“The Goldfinch” by Donna Tartt follows Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, who survives an accident that takes the life of his mother. His dad abandoned him, so Theo is taken in by a wealthy friend’s family. Totally confused by life in affluent Manhattan, disturbed by classmates who can’t relate to him and overcome with grief for his dead mother, Theo desperately holds onto the only thing that reminds him of her: a small, strangely appealing painting of a goldfinch.

“Shotgun Lovesongs” by Nickolas Butler is about four friends who grew up in a small town in Wisconsin and are struggling to come into their own as adults. One friend never left town, staying to work on the family farm that’s been around for generations. The others moved on, with differing levels of success.

Then there is Beth, a woman who means something special to each of the friends.

“The Signature of All Things” by Elizabeth Gilbert takes place in the 17th and 18th centuries and tells the story of the Whittaker family, led by Henry Whittaker who is born poor in England and makes a great fortune in the quinine trade, becoming the richest man in Philadelphia.

Henry’s daughter, Alma, eventually inherits her father’s fortune and becomes a botanist. As her research brings her deeper into the secrets of evolution, she falls in love with Ambrose Pike, a talented artist whose paintings of orchids are unmatched by anyone.

While Alma is a clear-minded scientist, Ambrose is a utopian artist. What unifies them is their frenzied desire to understand the spiritual world and the structure behind all life.

“Wild: Lost to Found on the Pacific Coast Trail” by Cheryl Strayed recounts the author’s own adventure as she hiked more than 1,000 miles on the Pacific Coast Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington state.

Following the death of her mother and the end of her marriage, Strayed made what she regards as the most impulsive decision of her life: to hike the trail. Having no experience or training, Strayed recounts her adventure that she admits maddened, strengthened and eventually healed her.
