Sun, snakes & the beauty of the river

KENT — High school students from the Kent School and elementary school students from Kent Center School gathered on the shores of the Housatonic River (which runs through the boarding school’s campus) to learn about the flora, fauna, bugs and more that live in the water and the surrounding valley.

They got a chance to try to “catch” paper fish with handmade fishing rods made of string and sticks. They used magnifying glasses to examine microscopically small river creatures. And they enjoyed a gorgeous spring afternoon out of doors.

The outing was part of the Housatonic Valley Association’s Source-to-Sound canoe trip and celebration. Experienced paddlers are traveling by canoe from Massachusetts (the river’s source) to Long Island Sound (the river’s terminus). Along the way, they are stopping in towns and taking part in educational activities to help young people learn to love their river.
