If anyone passing by Sharon Green on Labor Day sees groups of people diligently driving nails into trees, he may rest assured that he is neither witnessing an ancient Druidical rite nor a species of New England VooDoo. He is seeing Sharon residents attempting to save a vestige of a precious heritage, the stately elms of Sharon Green. Zinc is one of the commonest forms of fungicide, and, in this case, is applied to trees most simply in the form of zinc-coated nails, which are hammered into the trunk at spaced intervals. The zinc coating on these special nails is gradually released into the trees, where it acts as a deterrent to the elm disease.

Dutcher’s Bridge, in its latest reincarnation, will open the week after Labor Day, weather permitting. The new 44-foot wide, 230-foot long span over the Housatonic, which cost $2.6 million and nearly a year to build, connects the towns of Canaan and Salisbury. It is built, according to Connecticut Department of Transportation engineers, to accommodate 5,400 car and truck crossings per day along U.S. Route 44.

CORNWALL — Without ceremony nearly a month ago, a Guida Seibert milk truck rattled across the Covered Bridge to deliver its cargo of dairy products to Cornwall residents for the last time. Richard Hall of Winsted, Cornwall’s milkman for two of his 34 years behind the wheel, said he plans to go into the restaurant business with his relatives. Avery-Greene Dairy, a subsidiary of Guida Seibert, could no longer afford delivery, staff said, if the company hoped to turn a profit.
