Welcome, former readers of The Winsted Journal

The Lakeville Journal is now including coverage of news and events in the towns of Winchester/Winsted, Norfolk, Colebrook, Barkhamsted and New Hartford.

These towns had formerly been covered by The Lakeville Journal Co.’s Winsted Journal, which had been in publication for 21 years.

Winsted and Winchester Center are the principal communities in the town of Winchester. Its municipal government consists of a seven-member Board of Selectmen; a mayor (the current mayor is Candy Perez); and a town manager (who currently is Robert Geiger). The town’s population as of the 2010 census was 11,242. 

Students in Winsted attend Batcheller Early Education Center, Pearson Middle School and a semi-private high school called The Gilbert School. (Winsted students attend The Gilbert School unless they are accepted as part of Northwestern Regional High School’s agriculture education program.) 

Northwestern Regional High School is in Winsted but serves students from New Hartford, Barkhamsted, Norfolk and Colebrook (not Winsted). 

Northwestern Regional School is in Barkhamsted and is a middle school for students in grades seven and eight from New Hartford, Barkhamsted, Norfolk and Colebrook (not Winsted).

Winsted is the home of Northwestern Connecticut Community College.

Norfolk had a population of 1,709 in 2010. It has a three-person Board of Selectmen (Susan M. Dyer is the current first selectman). Students in Norfolk from pre-kindergarten to sixth grade attend the Botelle School.

Barkhamsted, which includes the village of Riverton, had a population of 3,799 in 2010. It has a three-person Board of Selectmen (Don Stein is the current first selectman). Students in Barkhamsted and Riverton attend Barkhamsted Elementary School for kindergarten through sixth grade.

In 2010, New Hartford had a population of 6,970. It has a three-person Board of Selectmen (Daniel V. Jerram is the current first selectman).

It has Bakerville Consolidated School for kindergarten and first- and second-grade classes, New Hartford Elementary for first- and second-grade classes and Ann Antolini School for third- through sixth-grade classes.

In 2010, Colebrook had a population of 1,485. It has a three-person Board of Selectmen (Thomas D. McKeon is the current first selectman). Students in Colebrook attend Colebrook Consolidated School for kindergarten through sixth grade.
