Budget hearing, special finance meeting April 29

SHARON — The budget public hearing is scheduled for Friday, April 29, at 7 p.m., at Town Hall. The budgets for the Board of Selectmen and the Board of Education for the 2011-12 fiscal year will be presented to and discussed by the town. Following the meeting, the Board of Finance will hold a special meeting. The selectmen’s budget proposal for municipal expenses is $2,991,883, a 1.1 percent increase over this fiscal year’s budget (the new fiscal year begins July 1). The Board of Education budget proposal for Sharon Center School is $3,686,345, a 1.99 percent increase over this fiscal year’s budget. The total proposed education budget is $6,274,426 including Sharon’s portion of the Region One School District budget. The regional budget is voted on separately, in a regionwide machine vote on Tuesday, May 3, from noon to 8 p.m. at the town halls in Sharon, Salisbury, North Canaan, Kent, Cornwall and Falls Village (town of Canaan).After the public hearing, the budgets can still be modified, and will be brought to the public for a town meeting vote on May 13 at 8 p.m. at Town Hall.

NORTH CANAAN — A recount held Monday, Nov. 10, at Town Hall confirmed Democrat Jesse Bunce’s narrow victory over incumbent First Selectman Brian Ohler (R) in one of the tightest races in town history.

“A difference of two votes,” said recount moderator Rosemary Keilty after completing the recanvass, which finalized the tally at 572 votes for Bunce and 570 for Ohler.

KENT – The cold temperatures and biting winds didn’t deter a crowd from gathering for the annual Veterans Day ceremony Tuesday morning, Nov. 11.

Standing in front of the memorials honoring local residents who served in the military, First Selectman Martin Lindenmayer, himself a veteran, said the day is “not only a time to remember history, but to recognize the people among us—neighbors, friends and family—who have served with courage, sacrifice and devotion. Whether they stood guard in distant lands or supported their comrades from home, their service has preserved the freedoms we enjoy each day.”
