West Cornwall wastewater project approved

CORNWALL — Voters approved a $6.2 million bond issue to fund a wastewater management project in West Cornwall by a vote of 302 to 179 on Saturday, July 9.

Voter turnout was steady throughout the day for the town-wide referendum at the Town Hall.

Six years of meetings and planning preceded the referendum vote. The project will consist of the laying of sewer lines, collection and treatment in West Cornwall, ultimately bringing about expansion of the usage capacity of existing structures, presently limited in part by their septic configurations. A significant issue is the proximity of those aged septic systems to wells.

Project costs will be partially supported by a federal Community Project Funding grant of $3 million, allocated to the town in recent months by the federal government.

“The people have spoken,” First Selectman Gordon Ridgway said, after the results were announced. He thanked to the West Cornwall Wastewater Committee for its years of working toward getting the complicated project this far. The referendum approval will set into motion more planning and design aspects of the project.

“We’ll keep working toward bringing West Cornwall back,” Ridgway said, recalling its years as a thriving commercial center.

“What happens in West Cornwall village has regional significance,” Ridgway said, adding that he is optimistic for the future of the area.
