Housy hockey wins 4 in a row

FALLS VILLAGE — The Housatonic Valley Regional High School hockey team won its fourth consecutive game on Friday, Jan. 23, with a 2-1 win over the visiting Icecats from Bethel-Brookfield-Danbury high schools. The win brings the Mountaineers to a 5-3-1 record with 11 games to play in the season.

Both teams traded possession to open the game. Several minutes in, the Icecats gained the early 1-0 advantage. Following a Mountaineer icing, the Icecats won the ensuing faceoff and played the puck behind the net into the right corner. The puck was collected by a forward and centered, where it was collected near the right circle and fired on the net, beating goalie Eric Chin low.

Just minutes later, Housy tied the game on a shot from the right point by Wes Reel assisted by Chris Richards.

Play remained even for the rest of the first period, and both teams headed to the dressing room tied 1-1.

With just under 14 minutes left in the second period, the Mountaineers again found the back of the net when James Hufton skated the puck down the right side before getting off a shot that was blocked. The rebound trickled into the open slot, and Jason Diamond was there to knock it home for the 2-1 lead.

That score remained for the rest of the game, and with just under two minutes left the Icecats pulled their goalie in favor of an extra skater. Housy’s defense was up to the task and prevented the opposition from maintaining possession for an extended period of time, and the final horn sounded with the home team recording the win.

“It was a great, all-around effort. The seniors stepped up in the end and secured the victory,” said Head Coach Dean Diamond.

Up next for Housy was an away game against Woodstock on Wednesday, Jan. 28 (after this issue went to press), followed by a home contest against the Eastern Eagles on Friday, Jan. 30, at The Hotchkiss School.
