Town of Washington Recreation hosts summer basketball clinic at Village Hall

MILLBROOK — Kenny Dawson, co-founder of Triple Threat Basketball out of Poughkeepsie, is coach and CEO of the Playmaker Basketball League. Dawson spent two weeks this summer coaching 20 youngsters the fine art of basketball. He also started the first Millbrook Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) basketball program, the Harlem Hoops.

Sponsored by the Town of Washington Recreation Department, the clinic ran the weekends of Aug. 6 and Aug. 13.

Dawson, who has been coaching for more than 25 years, taught the ins and outs of both offense and defense. Offensively, he taught one-on-one plays and moving with the ball. Defensively, he taught some basic moves, boxing out drills and defensive team play. All the while he stressed fellowship and good sportsmanship.

Town of Washington Recreation Director Chelsea Edson praised the program.

“We were grateful to have [Coach Dawson] join us this summer,” she said. “He has a great rapport with the kids. Each child leaves with improvement, whether it’s their first time playing and they’re learning to dribble or they’re experienced, working on their shot.”

The clinic was open to boys and girls, 7 years old and up.

“As a summer two-week program, it’s great to see the kids from all levels and ages working as a team. You see them warm up together, help each other, and offer compliments. Kenny has a great way of bringing kids together,” said Edson.

Meanwhile, registration for fall recreation programs is underway.
