Volunteers help clean up Tatro’s Pond

WINSTED — A group of volunteers worked to clean up Tatro’s Pond on Saturday, July 11.

Dwaine Gomez, formerly of Winsted and now living in New York, put out word on social media and coordinated with the Winsted Department of Parks and Recreation to solicit helpers.

The volunteers cleared weeds and picked up trash on a hot and humid Saturday.

“I grew up on this pond, and I come through here and pick up stuff when I’m visiting my kids,” Gomez said. “I’m looking around, and I realize this place could use some help. It’s just in disarray.”

According to Gomez, the pond, formerly a watering hole on a farm, has gone through many iterations and changes and is currently on long-term lease to the town.

“The town maintains the pond a little based on what little is in the budget,” Gomez said.

The day’s goals, Gomez said, were to clear back overgrowth from the edge of the pond and remove any litter and garbage.

Progress would depend on how many people showed up and how long they stayed.

“We don’t want people to worry about stepping on snakes or hidden glass when they come out here,” Gomez said.

Originally a bonfire had been planned, although that did not quite work with fire permits and regulations. Gomez said they would plan on having the bonfire next year.

He said that most of the men and women who carried trimmers and trash bags out through the high grass do not live in Winsted.

Yet, they all shared a fondness for the pond.

“I’ve got a lot of fond memories of this place,” New Hartford resident Troy Lamere said.

Lamere said growing up in the area meant he spent a lot of time fishing and carousing near the pond, which was better maintained in years past, featuring a small boardwalk and a dam.

“It’s just about giving back to the community, for what the community has done for me over the years,” Gomez said.
