Nonnewaug knocks Housatonic out of BL postseason

WOODBURY — Housatonic Valley Regional High School boys basketball was eliminated from the Berkshire League tournament Feb. 18 after a 76-62 loss to reigning champion Nonnewaug High School.

Nonnewaug's triple-threat offense found success both in the paint and on the perimeter against Housatonic. Lincoln Nichols, Brady Herman and Matt Shupenis combined for 64 of the Chiefs' points in the quarterfinal game.

After falling behind early, the Mountaineers refused to go down without a fight. HVRHS cut a double-digit lead to seven points in the third quarter before foul trouble stalled offensive momentum.

HVRHS juniors Anthony Foley and Wesley Allyn each had season-high scoring nights with 21 and 16 points respectively. Defensively, Owen Riemer forced repeated turnovers through steals and swatted shots.

After the game, Housatonic coach Kurt Johnson reflected on the season, calling it an "improvement but we didn't hit our ceiling." He described graduating seniors Jesse Bonhotel, Mason O'Niel, Sam and Jacob Marcus as "the toughness of the team, so that's the challenge that the young guys will have to figure out" next year.

Nonnewaug advanced to the semifinal round Feb. 20 against Thomaston High School. On the other side of the Berkshire League bracket, undefeated Shepaug Valley High School got matched against Lakeview High School. Both games will be played at Northwestern High School back-to-back beginning at 5:15 p.m.

North Canaan selectmen choose Chris Sorrell to fill board vacancy

The North Canaan Board of Selectmen is back to full strength following the appointment of local resident and former state trooper Chris Sorrell to fill the vacancy left by Brian Ohler.

First Selectman Jesse Bunce and Selectman Melissa Pinardi appointed Sorrell following a selection process that drew eight candidates. The seat had been vacant since Ohler stepped down July 31 after taking a leave of absence in March for health reasons, leaving the board down to two members for several months.

NORTH CANAAN, CT – Home prices and sales continued to climb in North Canaan through July, while limited inventory kept the town’s housing market tilted toward sellers.

The median price of a single-family home for the 12 months ending July 31 was $355,000, up 27% from $279,900 during the previous 12-month period. It was also 42% higher than the $250,000 median recorded for the year ending July 31, 2024.

NEW PRESTON — As hydrilla and other aquatic invasive species spread across Connecticut, a new watercraft inspection and decontamination program at Lake Waramaug is testing an additional defense against their spread from lake to lake.

Launched this spring, the program operates at two sites: a municipal inspection station at the Lake Waramaug boat ramp and a hot-water decontamination facility slightly more than a mile away at the New Preston firehouse on Route 202. Organizers describe it as Connecticut’s first fully integrated, lake-based watercraft inspection and decontamination program.

TORRINGTON — A judge issued a protective order Thursday, Aug. 27, in the criminal case against Maxwell Abendroth, the former Indian Mountain School athletic director and gym teacher charged with three felonies involving alleged sexual contact with a 15-year-old student.

The court identified the person protected by the order only by initials and did not disclose the individual’s relationship to Abendroth or the pending case.
