New Milford co-op hockey team ties with Shepaug 4-4

WASHINGTON — Hockey teams from New Milford High School and Shepaug Valley High School met at The Frederick Gunn School’s rink Wednesday, Feb. 25.

The two sides proved to be evenly matched and ended the game in a 4-4 draw.

Both teams are co-op programs, including players from multiple schools. This occurs when a school lacks enough players to form its own team, so interested athletes team up with other school players for the love of the game.

New Milford’s hockey team contains two Housatonic Valley Regional High School players: Logan Miller and Melanie Rundall.

The game with the Shepaug started fast. New Milford’s Jonathan DeRoberts scored after only 30 seconds, which was followed minutes later by a goal from Joshua Shook.

The 2-0 lead didn’t last long as Shepaug’s Jameson McTamney and captain Gunnar Ough scored.

The goal of the day came in the second period when Ough took the puck the length of the ice and scored a high-powered slap shot.

Back and forth, both teams played very hard and traded goals. The third period ended with a 4-4 tie.

An eight-minute sudden death overtime period was added, but neither side was able to find the back of the net.

The game ended officiallywith a score of 4-4.

The result moved New Milford’s season record to 4-12-3 and Shepaug stood at 10-7-2.

Several vehicles were broken into and two were stolen during a series of related incidents in North Canaan and Salisbury overnight Thursday, Aug. 27, into Friday, Aug. 28, according to state police.

Trooper Spencer Bronson, North Canaan’s resident state trooper, announced in a Facebook post Friday that several vehicles in the Barlow Street area had been entered and rummaged through. There were similar reports from residents in Salisbury.

TORRINGTON -- The Housatonic Valley Regional High School boys varsity soccer team opened its 2026 preseason with a confident, high‑energy showing in Torrington Friday, Aug. 28.

HVRHS scored a pair of second-half goals against Torrington High School and maintained a clean sheet defensively in the scrimmage. The friendly match was played on a sunny afternoon at Robert Frost Athletic Complex with the temperature around 79 degrees.

Bear Mountain rescue prompts warning about hiking preparedness

An after-dark rescue on the Undermountain Trail on Monday, Aug. 24 prompted officials to warn unprepared hikers from setting out close to sundown.

SALISBURY — A nighttime rescue involving approximately 18 emergency responders has prompted local officials to warn hikers against entering the Bear Mountain area without adequate supplies or enough time to return before dark.

Crews were dispatched to the Undermountain Trail trailhead on Undermountain Road shortly before 9 p.m. Monday, Aug. 24, after two hikers called 911 to report that one of them, a 62-year-old woman, was experiencing numbness on one side of her body.
