Hula-Hooping for two at the Hunt Library

FALLS VILLAGE — The David M. Hunt Library hosted an event that evoked a favorite summer pastime, with a hula-hooping contest for children of all ages on Friday, July 17.

“I can do it longer than you!” exclaimed 6-year-old Bearett as he hula-hooped alongside library event coordinator Anna Pattison, more commonly known as “Miss Anna,” at the Hunt Library’s Hula-Hoop Competition. Event attendees included Ariel Odell, and her two children Bearett, 6 and Wesson, 3.

“It’s a great way for the kids to get some energy out,” Odell said. As Falls Village residents, she and her children enjoy many of the library’s programs and events.

The Hunt Library hosts a wide variety of events and programs that are open to both residents and non-residents, often in collaboration with The Center on Main.

For example, on August 6, the library plans to bring Candy Land to life, inviting community members to compete in a larger than life version of the classic board game.

The library also recruited volunteers to help build the Candy Land set on July 21. Crafty community members were invited to put their skills to use.

“It’s a gathering of the creative minds,” said Pattison. “We’re making everything to bring this event to life.”

Several vehicles were broken into and two were stolen during a series of related incidents in North Canaan and Salisbury overnight Thursday, Aug. 27, into Friday, Aug. 28, according to state police.

Trooper Spencer Bronson, North Canaan’s resident state trooper, announced in a Facebook post Friday that several vehicles in the Barlow Street area had been entered and rummaged through. There were similar reports from residents in Salisbury.

TORRINGTON -- The Housatonic Valley Regional High School boys varsity soccer team opened its 2026 preseason with a confident, high‑energy showing in Torrington Friday, Aug. 28.

HVRHS scored a pair of second-half goals against Torrington High School and maintained a clean sheet defensively in the scrimmage. The friendly match was played on a sunny afternoon at Robert Frost Athletic Complex with the temperature around 79 degrees.

Bear Mountain rescue prompts warning about hiking preparedness

An after-dark rescue on the Undermountain Trail on Monday, Aug. 24 prompted officials to warn unprepared hikers from setting out close to sundown.

SALISBURY — A nighttime rescue involving approximately 18 emergency responders has prompted local officials to warn hikers against entering the Bear Mountain area without adequate supplies or enough time to return before dark.

Crews were dispatched to the Undermountain Trail trailhead on Undermountain Road shortly before 9 p.m. Monday, Aug. 24, after two hikers called 911 to report that one of them, a 62-year-old woman, was experiencing numbness on one side of her body.

Continuing a popular tradition, the Sharon Playhouse will present a one-performance-only staged reading of “The Divine Sister,” another riotous comic romp by the acclaimed playwright and performer Charles Busch, on Friday, Aug. 28 at 7 p.m.

The play is a wild and witty homage to Hollywood films that feature nuns — from “The Song of Bernadette” and “The Bells of St. Mary’s” to “The Singing Nun” and “The Sound of Music.” It is classic Charles Busch: wickedly funny, gloriously over-the-top and overflowing with theatrical joy.

A Vietnamese water puppet musical returns to the quarry where it began

“The Magnificent Ms. Pham” combines Vietnamese water puppetry, shadow theater, music and storytelling.

“The Magnificent Ms. Pham,” the first Vietnamese American water puppet show, is returning to the water where it was born. The perpetual motion puppet show will be at TurnPark Art Space in West Stockbridge, Mass., Aug. 28 and 29, following a sold-out New York City premiere earlier this year. The production was originally developed at TurnPark, where its puppets first danced across the surface of the quarry lake.

Created by Vietnamese American artist Tommy Nguyen and director and designer Doug Fitch, the production tells the story of Nguyen’s mother, Kim Pham, and her journey from Vietnam to the United States. The story moves between memory, Vietnamese history and mythology, and the realities of immigration, following Kim from her childhood in Vietnam through her escape as a “boat person” and eventual life in Houston, Texas.
